Press release 5#
Exciting, innovative, bold…Sculpture in the Park at the Sculpture Park @ Waitakaruru curated by Rob Garrett.
The opening is fast approaching; works are beginning to arrive on site in preparation for installation on the weekend of the 14th and 15th November.
Ian Boyle, our feature artist this week is working on site to complete his ‘living teepee’, usually Ian can be seen on the hillside Sunday through Wednesday slaving away on his creation. He is weaving several layers using different woods (all found on site). The inner coat is tightly woven from ‘dead’ wood while the subsequent layers feature some living shoots. Over time the teepee will become the core of this group of saplings. As they mature the nature of the structure as a whole will alter while always maintaining the original structure at its core (I suspect pruning will be required!). In time this work will come to resemble the heart of a tree, it is a space designed for sitting and contemplating; the view is fantastic looking out over the plain towards the west.
So a work that will alter over time, visually it will become more integrated into the landscape and the internal space will reflect this.
I am imagining the fun there will be in regularly sitting in this work and experiencing the changes that will take place.
Ian’s creation will be ready for visitors soon, visit the Park and partake of a bit of literal ‘tree hugging’!
Sculpture in the Park opens 22nd November at the Sculpture Park at Waitakaruru Arboretum
