Drift Sessions Set to Record their first Track at Park Road Post

The Drift Sessions

The music of Ryan Edwards in support of mens' mental health

A message to all members of The Drift Sessions

So - I'm about to share studio space with one of NZ music's true legends. Just thought I'd drop that in. Mike Chunn was the bassist for Split Enz, NZ's first true international act, and he is flying down to our neck of the woods to lend his talents to the new track, Drifting Tonight

But first, it feels as though we're moving into the home straight now, but when you're doing a project like this, you can fully expect the home straight to be littered with obstacles, with the odd ambush to deal with before you reach the finish line. Which of course makes it all the more exciting.

In this week alone, we're having the Drift Sessions fundraiser at the amazingly cool Shoreline Cinema in Waikanae (where we'll all listen to good music and watch the classic movie flick Almost Famous), then on Thursday I play to a bunch of architects, but the big news is that tomorrow (Tuesday), we're going into the studio to record the song for the Mental Health Awareness week which is in the first week of October.

The song is called 'Drifting Tonight', and it's intended to give an insight into what it's like to be out on your own with an issue that is seldom black and white. There are periods of 'okayness' as there are times of real difficulty, but the song is intended to be uplifting - an acknowledgment of the
journey that many people find themselves on.

Producer Asa Bennett has been working like a madman over the weekend putting this song together, and I can officially tell you that the song is going to sound very big indeed. The song will be recorded at Wellington's Park Road Post http://www.parkroadpost.co.nz/our-work/showreels/ - with credits including Peter Jackson's recent 'The Lovely Bones', as well as movies like District 9 and Separation City. Park Road Post is kindly donating the studio usage, and I will be heading in there with members from my band, Mike Chunn, and an up and coming singer-songwriter from Wellington called Ash Young.

Mike Chunn heads up a fantastic foundation called 'Play it Strange' http://www.playitstrange.org.nz/which gives secondary school students in NZ the chance to experience and grow with music, to write, record, perform and to really immerse themselves in music, and Ash placed third in the recent national songwriting competition.

So there will be photos aplenty coming, not to mention a very cool track.

Oh - and in case you live nearby or know someone who does who happens to like golf and a day away from the office - Thursday September 23rd is the date for the Drift Sessions Charity Golf Day at the world famous Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, with Greg Turner (NZ golf legend) doing the guest speaking. Fingers and all other bits crossed!

My band '1k to the beach', along with special guests from the music and entertainment world will come together to create a collection of songs to help some people who - for any number of reasons - can't leave their worries in the carpark. The Drift Sessions - it's the music inspired by the beach, the inspirational Kapiti Island, and the fabulous Drift Cafe - and it's all in support of men's mental health.

There will be lots of news, lots to tell you about, and loads of ways to get involved.
