Comrade Hero 2008-2012 (Work In Progress)

Promoting Visual Literacy through Sequential Storytelling.

"Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi mauria."

My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul.

Comrade Hero is the nom de plume and namesake of my signature superhero character, and the creative project that I have been actively working on since 2008.

My goal is to create, produce, and promote Comrade Hero, a bilingual English and Maori science fiction and superhero themed series set in and around Antarctica, Australia, and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

The Comrade Hero series will involve production of both a standard digital comic and an enhanced digital motion comic book with full voice acting, narration, sound effects, music, and subtitles.

The aim is to promote literacy skills development and encourage Maori language exposure through the Comrade Hero series - engaging the reader in an entertaining reading and listening experience.

The Comrade Hero series will initially be published in English and Maori, but will have the capability to support additional languages like Mandarin Chinese and Russian.

The reader will be able to display the words and listen to the story solely in English or Maori, or decide to display the words in Maori, but listen to the story in English (and vice versa).

Comrade Hero is the nom de plume and namesake of my superhero character, and the creative project that I have been actively working on since 2008.

Comrade Hero was originally intended as a superhero themed novel, and became my academic submission in the Manuscript Mentoring program of Waiariki Polytechnic’s Diploma in Creative Writing.

In 2009, I became interested in comic book and graphic novel writing, and Comrade Hero gradually evolved from prose to script.

I also began examining potential innovative ways to use Comrade Hero to assist literacy skills development and encouraging language exposure.

In December, 2010 I completed the Manuscript Mentoring program under writing mentors Sue Emms and Majella Cullaine, graduated from the Diploma in Creative Writing, and continued working on Comrade Hero.

In June 2011, I finished accessing support from Te Puni Kokiri’s Maori Business Facilitation Service in the form of business mentors Tania Kelland and Ken Hill of Maori Economic Development Ltd.

In August 2011, I started working with Enterprise Great Lake Taupo, a local Council initiative in my hometown that aims to team businesses and entrepreneurs to provide access to information, expertise, assistance and skills.
