Pack of Girls - set design

Set Design ....... these words will be the death of me I'm sure.

I have recently seen ATC's Mary Stuart and Taki Rua's production of Awhi Tapu, both absolutely stunning pieces of theatre and both so different in set design.  How do they do it?  How do they acheive such excellence and simplicity in their work?  Where do the ideas come from?

So we have a small budget of zero, of course we do, we're a newborn.  However I'm a strong believer in karma ... and funding applications!  Where there's a will there's a way - the motto of all the newly formed theatre companies in the world methinks.

The thing is, I just have no idea where to begin.  I'm not a big fan of moving set on stage, I like simplicity and seamless edges, but even the most seamless of sets that I've seen of late, all come with absolute complexity behind the scenes in it's making.

So that is where we are up to at Black Box, rehearsals kick off into full throttle in a couple of weeks and then the fun times begin!
