Violince by Karen Chalmers
Current Work in Progress by ChalmersArtwork
"Violince" is an Emotive Nude Graphite Portrait illustrating Men in Music.
(yes the Spelling Mistake is intentional)
Approximately 594 x 420 mm in size, using Arches Hot Press 185msg Paper and Graphite Mech Pencils only.
Currently at 48% Stage, approx 15 hours
Not quite sure what my intention is with the Background; I was thinking of just leaving it blank as his stance will be diluted if i put a background.
I am exploring my ability to use a deeper, darker pencil format, along with a new technique (for me anyway) of using solely pencil - No blending etc.
I’m struggling on how to bring out the detail amongst the darkness. The subtle changes I can see up close, and which help the image work just don’t tend to pop out the drawing unless you have your face pressed to it.

- Karen Chalmers
Born on a farm in Henley, New Zealand; Karen attended the University of Otago for several years studying Education, Classical Studies, History and Law.
Drawing and Art came into Karen's life during her University years, where taught herself the basics of realistic drawing as a hobby. Letting her thirst for knowledge and imagination guide her, Karen soon found herself completing commissioned portraits for several local names. In 2008 she entered into her first Art Competition, where her artwork was accepted into exhibition and sold within the first hour of the exhibition. In 2009 Karen moved to Christchurch, New Zealand; however it wasn’t until the end of 2010 that she found the time to pick up her hobby once again. Following a successful exhibition in Dunedin, and an offer of a Gallery placement in Christchurch, Karen has continued to expand her artistic ability and production, entering in several competitions nationally, and producing art for many locals.
Post Christchurch Earthquake, Karen has decided to stay in Christchurch, with a city that she has grown to love, and continue to produce art part time.
