A Musician's Perspective
The reTHiNK Grant team shot a few interview questions at one of the musicians working on the reTHiNK Possible Worlds project. Here's what John McNab had to say about his experience so far.
What's your role in the show?
Musician & Musical Director - so I'm playing myself and also doing a lot of composing.
What is reTHiNK Possible Worlds about?
It’s a show that uses various characters negotiating their way through life’s changes, self-imposed or inflicted on them by their environment, to create a journey through the “maze” of life and change attitudes about mental health.
How do you relate to the themes in the show?
I relate to a lot of the different themes that come through, I think everyone will. From the point of view of a musician, I’m introspective at times, confused by style and having dropped an office-based career for music full-time I’m often wondering ‘am I any good or shouldn't I be better than this??’ It’s hard to carve out a place for yourself. The journey’s worth it though and that really comes through in the show.
What has it been like creating this production?
I have worked with The Literatti before, but this time I was alongside them every step of the way, from the initial writing workshops until now. I have enjoyed the creative processes and closer interaction with the poems and poets this time around. It has really pushed my musical boundaries out further.
What can an audience member expect to encounter?
They can expect a complete theatrical show with thought provoking, entertaining characters and narratives, with plenty of visuals, interactive music and dancing in support.
The audience mayleave the show with fresh insights to their own minds and experiences and possibly those that surround them.
Why do you think people should make sure they see reTHiNK Possible Worlds?
Because if they don’t they miss out on all of the above :)

We are working to change the way our community thinks about mental illness / unwellness / distress / being human.
Nearly half the population will have one of these experiences in their life-times. Stigma and discrimination will be among the biggest barriers we face on our journey to recovery.
reTHiNK is here to help you understand that mental unwellness is normal, common and can be recovered from. We are an Auckland provider of the national Like Minds Like Mine programme, funded by the Ministry of Health.
