Back Before TV
Jess Quaid from Etched Dance Productions takes on the reTHiNK Possible Worlds cast interview and tells us how the show brings back the magic from a time before TV...
What is your role in the show?
I am one of the Dancers
What is reTHiNK Possible Worlds and what is it about?
This show is a tapestry of many creative arts, woven around threads of poetry. It speaks clearly to the human experience, of its pitfalls and problems and also of the chance we all have to choose a better way, to think and feel our way clear of the murk.
How do you relate to the themes in the show?
The idea that resonates with me most is the phrase “we are all human beings, navigating the maze of life”. As a species we seem to love dividing ourselves and labelling each other. It seems so easy to forget the truth that we are all just human, equally unique, equally deserving as we stumble together through our lives.
What has it been like creating this production?
A learning curve fore sure! As a dancer who tends to work from movement first and let the meaning arrive when it will, working on the concepts of the poems and the feeling of the music as they evolve has been both challenging and richly rewarding. The camaraderie and openness of the group has been a wonderful example of what a collaboration can be.
What can an audience member expect to encounter?
Way back before TV, before radio, when entertainment and wisdom were conveyed simultaneously through the voice, the body... people would gather to hear a storyteller, to be transported from the everyday, and to learn a little more about how their world worked. It is that experience, that immediacy and magic that reTHiNK Possible Worlds is offering.
Why do you think people should make sure they see reTHiNK Possible Worlds?
This show is a powerful and beautiful look at a side of life we don’t often see. It’s also a chance to experience some outstanding examples of several art forms at a ridiculously good price.

We are working to change the way our community thinks about mental illness / unwellness / distress / being human.
Nearly half the population will have one of these experiences in their life-times. Stigma and discrimination will be among the biggest barriers we face on our journey to recovery.
reTHiNK is here to help you understand that mental unwellness is normal, common and can be recovered from. We are an Auckland provider of the national Like Minds Like Mine programme, funded by the Ministry of Health.
