Giving & Sponsorship Research
The Ministry for Culture and Heritage has just this week released a research report Cultural Organisations: Giving and Sponsorship. This research is based on the survey responses of 480 New Zealand cultural organisations, big and small, from throughout New Zealand, and representing a wide range of creative disciplines or cultural activities.
The Ministry’s research provides benchmark giving and sponsorship figures for the April 2007-March 2008 tax year. The research establishes an annual level of cash and non-cash support for cultural organisations. The research also compares cultural organisations on the basis of size, location and type of cultural activity, and also on the basis of the source and type of support.
For more information about the Ministry’s research, including an Overview and the Full Report, see: http://mch.govt.nz/projects/culture/giving-sponsorship.html
The Ministry will repeat this survey, to enable trends in support to cultural organisations to be identified, including the impact of any tax or other incentives for charitable giving.
In addition to the Ministry's work, Philanthropy New Zealand http://www.philanthropy.org.nz/ has a variety of research that you may be interested in. In particular:

The research picture for philanthropy in New Zealand is looking a lot better than it was 10 years ago. Thanks to the earlier work of government departments that put their heads together to start ask the right questions in the big population surveys and the leadership of the Generosity Hub some of the gaps in our knowledge are starting to be filled. Because these big surveys take time to collect, collate, analyse and distribute their findings there’s usually a time lag of a year or two. Another good watching spot is the Charities Commission, which, if you want to spend a bit of time there extracting information, should be good for a few clues. So, we’re starting to get big picture information which is good for trends and international comparisons.
Completely up-to-the-minute, on the ground stuff can only be anecdotal, of course. I’d suggest that if you want to get that, go to the places where the givers, the ‘getters’ or their ‘go-betweens’ (the fundraisers) gather. The membership associations – Philanthropy NZ and my professional association, the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand (FINZ) have regular meetings and conferences.
But the really good news is that the Ministry (MCH) is about to publish very relevant research on giving and sponsorship...watch this space!
It seems MCH got in there just before you, Margaret, links and details of their research in Ingrid's post above.
Only seconds, Jooles, only seconds..
Very good detail but but my links prettier, I think....
