smART talk | Growing Audiences for the Arts
In 2009, Creative New Zealand developed a partnership with The Big Idea to deliver smART talk: interactive online forums with local and international audience and market development experts. At the time, The Big Idea had 18,000 New Zealand members, many of whom work in the creative industries, and 2,000 international members.
The forums allow moderated discussion between selected experts and the New Zealand arts community around topics that support and leverage Creative New Zealand’s interest in and commitment to audience development.
During the smART talk 03 | Philanthropy: Getting Enough? forum (12 – 30 April 2010) special guest Margaret Belich answered questions on the ‘art of fundraising’ in New Zealand's arts & cultural sector.
The smART talk 02 | Crack Web Marketing forum (11 November – 3 December 2009) moderated discussion between online specialist Vicki Allpress-Hill and the New Zealand arts community around online marketing topics that support and leverage Creative New Zealand’s interest in and commitment to audience development.
The smART talk 01 | Standout Branding forum (27 July – 7 August 2009) moderated discussion between branding specialist Brian Richards and the New Zealand arts community around topics that support and leverage Creative New Zealand’s interest in and commitment to audience development.
Creative New Zealand's Audience & Market Development Programme encourages arts organisations and individuals to build strong and dynamic relationships with their audiences. The programme offers advice, insight and data about audiences through research, skill building and coaching. It works with practitioners to develop audience development strategies to attract new audiences and retain existing audiences. The delivery of this programme is specific, targeted and initiative based.

Thanks for the chance to contribute and be part of this community. What I’ve loved about this forum series is how it has opened up the possibilities of new pathways for arts support. Go try some of them. Good luck and remember Pareto: “Give me a fruitful error full of seeds, bursting with its own corrections. You can keep your sterile truth for yourself.”
