Job description:

Diversityworks Trust invites expressions of interest from artists for an exhibition in association with Artstation in Auckland, New Zealand, centred around the theme “How Diversity Works.”

Diversity is a complex concept that encompasses thoughts, emotions, experiences, social context, political process, identity and more.

The purpose of the exhibition will be to reflect both internal and external processes that promote or restrict human diversity, including but not limited to personal, psychological, social, cultural and political factors.

The exhibition will aim to develop a more in-depth dialogue about diversity – moving beyond the usual characteristics of culture, race, gender, disability, sexuality – to explore the idea that diversity exists in all people, in all places, at all times and that the challenge to humanity is to recognise it and respond appropriately.

We will favour works that represent the complex and interactive nature of diversity over and above one-dimensional, representational articulations. Expressions should reflect the artist’s understanding of concepts of uniqueness, difference and abnormality in contrast to commonness, similarity and normality.

Artists are invited to use diverse mediums (eg. painting, drawing, photography, moving image, multimedia, sculpture, installation, written/spoken word, performance), with the intent that the exhibition space will reflect the diversity theme. Existing works will be considered as long as they match the exhibition criteria. Works will be selected for an online or gallery exhibition at Artstation from 16 August to 3 September 2011.

Key skills sought:

Artist’s understanding of the concept of uniqueness, difference and abnormality in contrast to commonness, similarity and normality.
