Artstation toi tu, Auckland Council’s central community visual arts facility is currently calling for exhibition proposals for the Artstation Gallery in 2011-2012. The Artstation Gallery is a public space presenting exhibitions and art projects from Auckland's diverse communities.

The exhibitions are selected by the Artstation curatorial group which meet three times a year. The first round of proposals are due Friday 18 February 2011 and are welcome from artists groups that will present exhibitions that comment on community and social issues that involve community and/or audience participation.

Priority will be given to group exhibitions and proposals are encouraged from artists and curators working in a community context, Maori arts, cultural groups, diversity groups, youth projects and new and emerging artists, including tertiary students and recent graduates based in the Auckland region.

The gallery is situated on the first floor of the Artstation building. The large rectangular space is 10 x 8 metres and has a ceiling height of 3.3 metres. The walls have a flexible panelling system which allow the seven windows in the gallery to be covered or uncovered. The gallery has track lighting and multiple power outlets.

How to submit a proposal:

Applicants should supply a written outline of the proposed exhibition stating:

  • the idea behind the exhibition
  • the reason for the exhibition
  • how the exhibition is relevant to the communities of Auckland
  • how the exhibition will look

Applicants should also state the number of artists in the exhibition, the disciplines and media to be used, and any technical requirements.

Please also include visuals of relevant work and curriculum vitae for each artist to support your proposal.

Contextual information

Contextual information is required to support Artstation Gallery exhibitions. This material is required to encourage accessibility and understanding of the exhibitions and to enliven the viewer's experience.

Supporting information can take a number of forms including:

  • written (artist's statements, catalogue, essay)
  • verbal (artist's talk or presence in gallery)
  • visual (DVD or video)
  • participative (educational workshop).

Please outline in your proposal how you intend to enhance your exhibition through contextual information.

Proposal assessment

Proposals are assessed on the following criteria:

  • fit the gallery proposal criteria
  • must be the best quality ideas and artworks that extend and create an understanding of the art form and ideas presented
  • must have potential to attract a wide cross section of viewers
  • is accessible to the viewing public (contextual material is required).
