The New Zealand School of Music is a joint venture of Massey University and Victoria University. The NZSM is one of New Zealand’s leading university music schools, with strengths in a wide range of musical activity and study. In addition to offering its own degrees from the BMus to the PhD, the School also contributes to Massey’s and Victoria’s BA degrees.  A new suite of programmes of particular interest to performers, comprising the PGDipMus, MMA and DMA, are also being offered starting in 2010. The NZSM currently operates from two campuses in Wellington (Mt Cook and Kelburn) and from a campus at Albany, north of Auckland. In addition, some NZSM courses, largely extra-mural, are taught from the campus of Massey in Palmerston North.

The NZSM contributes actively to the cultural life of Wellington, putting on performances of a wide range of music (including gamelan, jazz, orchestral, chamber, and opera) both in the city and on its two campuses. The NZSM’s staff includes a number of composers, arrangers, conductors and performers who actively collaborate with numerous performing organizations across the nation and abroad.
