(Associate) Professor of Pacific Studies
The University of Auckland is seeking to appoint a Professor or Associate Professor with a distinguished record of research, teaching and service in an area related to the Pacific, to provide academic leadership for the Centre for Pacific Studies in its teaching and research programmes.
The Centre for Pacific Studies was established in 1985 to promote greater awareness and scholarly understanding of the Pacific region within the University and the wider community. The Centre is also an important interface between the University and Pacific communities who make up a significant and rapidly growing proportion of the population of New Zealand, especially in the greater Auckland area.
Housed in a purpose built complex adjacent to the University's striking Fale Pasifika, the Centre offers a BA major and postgraduate programmes from BA(Hons) to PhD in Pacific Studies, as well as undergraduate language courses in Samoan, Tongan and Cook Islands' Maori, and performance courses in Pacific Music and Dance.
The University is seeking a distinguished academic who can provide visionary leadership in the ongoing development of the Centre for Pacific Studies as a leading centre for research and teaching on the Pacific. There is no specific subject expertise required, but the successful applicant must be able to contribute to the teaching of courses as well as to postgraduate supervision and the development of a vibrant research culture in the Centre.
Applicants should have a PhD in a humanities or social science discipline and an established record of research and peer reviewed publication, demonstrated teaching and supervision ability and strong international links. Fluency in a Pacific language is desirable.
