Job description: 

An opportunity for an experienced Registrar has now become available to join the Museum Collection Team.

With over 300,000 items in its collection the Registrar is responsible for the effective management involved in gathering, maintaining, storing and retrieving reliable collection related data and information.

Under the leadership of the Registrar, the Registry Team will ensure collection policies, procedures and practices will be developed and updated where required. The role will also ensure the effective museum wide communication of the policies and promote the important role of the Registry Team in supporting the Museum’s commitment of responsible stewardship.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and monitor the quality of the inventory, cataloguing, database, processing of acquisitions, de-accessioning and loans, and physical movement of the Museum’s collection
  • Develop and implement regular data integrity reviews programme
  • Assisting with the development and presentation of training workshops
  • Receive and process all requests from the public and colleagues relating to the collection, courteously and accurately.

You will report directly to and work very closely with the Museum Collection Manager ensuring team members working with the collection are aware of and demonstrate an understanding and compliance of the Museum’s Collection Policies, procedures and processes, guaranteeing continuous development.

Skills and experience desired:

  • A degree or other appropriate qualification in Museum studies
  • 3 years relevant work experience
  • An understanding of appropriate object handling and care of taonga
  • People management skills
