Job description:

The Alexander Turnbull Library holds New Zealand’s premier research collections of manuscripts, maps, photographs, newspapers, drawings and prints. As part of our digitisation programme, the Pictures Online project digitises and catalogues photographs from the Library’s collections. This is a great opportunity to discover more about New Zealand’s heritage collections while learning new skills in digitisation and description.

The role has three distinct stages; firstly still images are captured using cameras. The images are then processed using Adobe Photoshop and a description is composed within the Library’s strict guidelines. The image and its description is then saved into our database.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic and interested in our heritage and who are keen to develop new skills. You will be working as part of a busy team who are passionate about what they do. The work can be repetitive and it is important that team members retain their attention to detail and a proactive approach to their work.

We are looking for people to demonstrate the following skills:

  • An advanced written English language ability.
  • A high level of computer literacy, ideally with some database administration experience.
  • Working knowledge of digital imaging technologies and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Experience and/or qualifications in a related area is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of conventional film and/or digital copy photography and photographic processes is advantageous.
  • An in-depth understanding of safe handling techniques for the protection of documentary heritage collection materials is advantageous.
