Assistant Director
We are looking for a suitable person to assist the Director, who is also the Founder and Chairman of the governing Trust Board.
The Trust has a range of activities, particularly in the visual arts disciplines –
- It runs the Pah Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre, which has:
- Regularly changing exhibitions and is open to the public free of charge 6 days a week
- An in house residency in partnership with the University of Otago for their fellows, other than the visual arts fellows.
- House concerts, dance, poetry etc.
- Educational and other public programmes
- An arts and design shop
- There were 130,000 visitors in the first year of operation
- Art Awards. These are the largest and longest running of their kind in the country. Four overseas residencies and cash prizes .
- Some 43 permanent revolving art loans to universities, schools, hospitals etc..
- Regular acquisitions of New Zealand Contemporary Art.
- Administration of Rannoch, an Arts and Crafts house with extensive galleries which is made available to various charities and individuals for fundraising.
- Makes extensive grants to other arts organisations and individuals.
We are looking for an intelligent, innovative, energetic individual who has had some experience in administration, preferably of an arts organisation. Achievements in the areas of managing staff, docents and volunteers, fundraising, educational programmes, marketing, publicity, publications, public relations, curating exhibitions, preparing reports and budgeting would be necessary, or at least helpful, to a greater or lesser degree in each case.
The successful candidate will directly liaise with the Auckland Council and other authorities, the cafe and hospitality operators and, when necessary, Wallace Corporation Ltd..
All staff will be answerable to the position which in turn will answer directly to the Director.
This will be an exciting, demanding but rewarding position.

TSB Bank Wallace Arts CentreThe TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre is Auckland’s exciting new cultural destination. Located in the historic Pah Homestead in Monte Cecilia Park, Hillsborough, the arts centre opened to the public in August 2010.
Pah Homestead was fully restored by the Auckland City Council together with the generous support of TSB Bank from 2009 to 2010 as the new home of the James Wallace Arts Trust and its collection.
The arts centre hosts a changing programme of free exhibitions curated from the James Wallace Arts Trust collection as well as regional touring exhibitions. The arts centre will also run ongoing community education programmes targeting Auckland schools and the wider public.
An artist in residency programme in association with Otago University is an important component of the arts centre. This partnership also provides for exhibitions curated from the extensive collections of the Hocken Library.
Many thanks to the Auckland Decorative and Fine Arts Society and its members who provide ongoing support to the centre through the provision of volunteer docents.
