Random Acts…. when it’s ok to play in the street!
Following the success of the 2009/2010 Random Acts Programmes on Auckland central city streets, THE EDGE in association with The BIG little City would like to invite professional performers from music, dance, theatre and interdisciplinary backgrounds to submit proposals for the 2011 season.

What is Random Acts?
Random Acts is a programme of free street theatre that will provide opportunities for the public to engage with high quality contemporary performance in unexpected ways. Random Acts will turn every-day pedestrian areas into performance spaces and celebrate our unique city, communities and stories by interacting directly with audiences in the central city. Random Acts creates experiences that are playful, thought provoking and magical.
What is The BIG little City?
The BIG little City is a vibrant visitor destination jam packed full of festivals, performances, events and attractions. It’s a central city that showcases culture, food, shopping and entertainment in an edgy urban community.
The diverse offering of Downtown Auckland, together with its maritime heritage, people and contemporary youthfulness provide an ideal backdrop for this series of eclectic, engaging and entertaining encounters.
We are looking for proposals that are:
- Unique
- Accessible (can be enjoyed and interpreted by a wide audience)
- Highly visible ( either by scale or distinct appearance)
- Interactive/ interventionist
- Reflect or comment on the edgy urban environment that is the BIG little City
- Self contained, including any power requirements
- Designed to be performed in outdoor conditions in a variety of locations over the season where any production elements are mobile or can be easily packed in and out after each performance
- Designed for a highly mobile audience
Please note: Companies must be available to perform for the full season of six days from 8 to 13 December, 2011, for both daytime and evening sessions, exact timings TBC.
Budget guidelines - we are looking to present a wide range of work that ideally fits within a budget up to $5,000 per project.
Projects from 2009 and 2010 included roving characters, circus/ acrobatic work, theatrical musical encounters, hip hop, tap and contemporary dance, interactive and site specific theatre and avant garde hairdressing.
Please note that the above budget figure is a guideline only and all proposals will be considered.
What to include in your proposal:
- Project outline
- Creative team bios
- Full budget including any development costs, technical costs, artist fees and travel and accommodation costs if applicable
- Proposed duration of performance and number of shows you can perform per day( over two x two hour periods)
- Approximate performance space size required
