Audition: Short+Sweet Auckland 2010 Wildcard

We are looking for a female to play the a 45+ year old, Maori co-lead in a new 10-minute play "VIOLETS ARE BLUE" written by Maori playwright Venus Stephens and directed by filmmaker Jack Woon, which has been accepted as a Wildcard entry for the Short+Sweet Auckland 2010 festival at the Herald Theatre, Auckland on Saturday 23 January 2010 (and possibly Sunday 31 January 2010 if it makes it into the Gala final of the competition).

THE ROLE

JOAN – Female, Maori, aged 45+

Joan is a woman who has seen and lived through plenty of hard times, raising six children even after her husband ran off with her best friend. But she has come out the other side with a strong family and a strong sense of humour. There’s nothing that can bullshit this bull-shitter.

THE PLAY

VIOLETS ARE BLUE is a short play about two unlikely strangers who connect at a South Auckland supermarket bus stop.

Violet, a young Chinese mother, strikes up a conversation with Joan, the old Maori woman she has often seen around the neighbourhood. Small-talk becomes girl-talk as they open up to each other about their families - but when Joan spots the tell-tale signs of a troubled relationship, she can’t help but nosey into Violet’s personal affairs and offering her guidance. ‘Us young chicks gotta stick together!’

THE REQUIREMENTS

You must be able to commit up to 15 rehearsal hours from 14 January 2010 to 22 January 2010, plus entire days on performance days (23 and possibly 31 January 2010).

You should ideally be Maori but we are interested to hear from other ethnicities as well. Ability to speak Te Reo would be a plus.

Acting experience is preferred but not necessary. If you are confident and have a positive attitude, then we would love to hear from you.
