Temporary Lectureships in Film
Temporary Lectureships in Film
School of English, Film, Theatre and Media Studies
Applications are invited for four fixed-term, part-time lecturer positions in film, to cover staff movements in 2010. Please note: applicants may apply for a single position or any combination of positions, although it is unlikely that the same person will teach all three first-trimester courses. Please indicate your interest or preferences in the covering letter. The positions involve the coordination and delivery of the following courses:
First trimester (term of contract February 15th to June 18th):
(1) Film 238: Auteur Study or the focus on a film artist or artists in order to study their role in producing a coherent body of work. Applicants will need to briefly detail their choice of auteur(s) in their covering letter.
(2) Film 332: Film Production or the practical study of the creative and technical aspects of film production. Areas covered will include scripting, photography, mise-en-scene, performance, sound recording and mixing, and editing. Applicants should have professional filmmaking experience and will need to briefly detail their experience of teaching production at tertiary level.
(3) Film 336: Women and Film. Topics that may be covered in this course include the history of women's involvement in filmmaking; the relation between feminism and filmmaking; definitions of feminist film; feminist film theory; genres associated with female audiences; and the representation of women, sex and gender on screen.
Second trimester (term of contract June 28th to October 29th):
(4) Either Film 101: Introduction to Film Studies, or Film 234/334: National Cinema B. Film 101 asks students to consider cinema as an art form, within a social and cultural context. It deals with concepts such as narrative structure, realism, mise-en-scene, stardom, authorship, genre, and audience. The course involves a small practical component. Film 234/334 is organized around the study of the cinema of a selected country or countries from cultural, historical, and economic perspectives. Applicants will need to briefly detail their preference for a national cinema (s) in their covering letter. The decision on which paper the successful applicant will take will happen at the time that the offer is made.
The successful applicants will have a postgraduate qualification in film or a related area. Tertiary teaching experience would be an advantage for all positions. Applications should consist of a covering letter and CV, and should be emailed to Lachelle Pretorius (Film Programme Administrator) at: lachelle.pretorius@vuw.ac.nz by the 30th November 2009. Applicants are also asked to ensure that two references are sent to the Administrator by the same date.
