Do You Mind? An art/science exhibition
Hello Good People
We are organizing an exhibition which will take place in late July this year. Primarily we are looking for artists who work in the visual arts. Secondly (though not essentially) we are looking for artists who may enjoy incorporating research practices into their work.
About the exhibition:
Do You Mind?' is an exhibition and catalogue of new artwork based on research projects specific to the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at the University of Auckland.
The exhibition will be open to the public and will comprise original artworks created through the partnership of individual artists with researchers from the Centre.
A challenge will be issued to the selected artists and researchers describing their requirements in participation. Each artist will then be partnered with a researcher or a research team, with whom they will collaborate for the duration of the project.
The challenge specific to the artists will ask them to interpret the work of their research partners in a creative capacity. New and engaging works are the anticipated outcome. The challenge specific to the researchers will be to provide direct information and vital inspiration pertaining to the purpose and process of their work.
The envisioned result is an exhibition and detailed publication that will push the boundaries of the interaction between research and creative engagement.
This project has been envisioned to stimulate a new level of awareness of the brain research currently underway in Auckland, captivating a fresh audience.
Artists challenge:
As an artist involved in this project the completion of a new work for the exhibition will be the key requirement. A written description of your work and a brief biography of your work to date will also be required to ensure we can represent you fairly in the accompanying publication and to any media.
You will be working with a researcher or research to create your work, as the purpose of this exhibition is to draw attention to the current scope of brain research being conducted. Your research partner is there to help you with any questions you may have about their specific field. At the moment there is no limit to the scope of your work and we will do our best to facilitate any ideas you may have.
As this is a community focussed project the budget will have its limitations but we are here to help you realize your concepts in a practical fashion and will do our best to accommodate you within reason.
Artwork will be exhibited for a minimum of one week. Work will remain property of the artist. A small percentage from any sales made from the exhibition will be given to the CBR. Pricing for the artwork should be negotiated or set by you the artist, in your favour.
The written description of your work that you supply will be printed in a limited edition publication being created to accompany the exhibition. It may include things such as your reaction or experience to the work of your research partner and/or how your concept for your work developed. Your writing will be accompanied by that of your research partner and imagery of your finished work.
Your biography does not need to be more than 200 words and may include one low-res image of your choice. The sooner you can supply us with this the better so we can confirm your involvement and introduce your work to third parties such as sponsors, media and proposed venues. If you have online representation such as a blog, website or portfolio please send us the link so we can include it.
If you are interested in participating please email us your expression of interest a short bio and some low-res images of your work (no more than 1mb is necessary). Feel free to send any relevant links that represent your work/presence online. At this stage we are only looking for between 10-15 artists. Your interest is appreciated so questions/comments are welcome too.
Thank you from THE BUSY NICE
We have a preference for artists with a research based practice in the visual arts.
