Theatre Technician

  • 20 hours per week
  • Fixed-term to 31 October 2010

Part of the Manukau City Council Arts unit, this position is one of the key roles for the new Mangere Arts Centre - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku, opening in September 2010.

Under the direction of the Performing Arts Manager, your key areas of responsibility will be; providing quality technical services for an annual programme of performances and events, care and maintenance of technical areas and equipment and ensuring health and safety guidelines are met in this highly specialised working environment.

You will have a high level of knowledge around technical needs in the performing arts and will be able to provide service and advice, have a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and will be enthusiastic about educating yourself and others in the various disciplines of the performing arts, including theatre, dance and music.

With a focus on developing strong links with practitioners, organisations and groups, you’ll be excited about working in a hands-on, creative and professional manner along with fellow staff.

You will be available to work flexible hours as designated, including evenings and weekends.

The aim of the performing arts programme is to make an impact on Mangere and the wider arts community and bring a sense of “wow factor” to the new arts centre.

    Arts and Culture South is a unit of Auckland Council. We run arts centres, exhibitions, events and classes through Auckland South.

    Our centres include Nathan Homestead (Manurewa) Otara Music Arts Centre and Fresh Gallery Otara, Mangere Arts Centre - Nga Tohu o Uenuku, Metro Theatre (Mangere), Papakura Gallery and Hawkins Theatre (Papakura).

    Our Arts Centres run a busy schedule of community arts activities including exhibitions by local artists, classes, holiday programmes, concerts, competitions and events.

    We have two arts co-ordinators devoted to Maori Arts and Pacific Arts. Nigel Borell, Toi O Manukau Kaiwhakahaere - Maori Arts Coordinator, runs Toi o Manukau's Waitangi Day Family Celebrations and coordinates Matariki events in South Auckland. Ema Tavola, Pacific Arts Coordinator and Manager of Fresh Gallery Otara, runs the annual Pacific Arts Summit and associated events. Both coordinators play an active role in the arts community as artists, mentors and supporters of the arts.
