The objects conservator plays a critical role in assessing, caring for and treating over 650 sculptures, installation works and other object based works of art in the collections held in the Auckland Art Gallery. They are also involved in the preparations for the exhibition programmes.

We seek a well-qualified conservator who is experienced in the conservation of objects within an art gallery or museum context. These include works of art made from a wide variety of materials such as metal, wood, stone, feathers, plant fibres, plastics, resins and polystyrene. They should also demonstrate a good understanding of cultural conservation principles and ethics with an in-depth knowledge of art museum practices.

Proven ability to work co-operatively and effectively with a range of other staff, artists, suppliers and stakeholders and to positively influence standards of care will be critical to your success in the role. You also need to be able to work independently and meet deadlines.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, well organised and capable of contributing to the planning and implementation of a conservation programme, as well as undertaking research and assisting with policy development. A high standard of oral and written communication is essential.

You must also be eligible for full membership in the New Zealand Conservators of Cultural Material.
