Travellers Box | Call for proposals
BACKGROUND: Originated in Denmark, the boxes have travelled to several countries over the past 5 years, (now including the UK, USA, Germany, Sweden and Norway, where a series of artists have taken part in various forms of the project. It has now arrived in New Zealand. One of the objectives is to expand on this growing international network, via artists collaborating directly (having the box and making work with it) and via those artists connecting with others also involved in the project, both in their own and in other countries.
WHEN: One week to three months, to be agreed.
DETAILS: We are interested in issues concerning socio-cultural relations such as the cultural divide in attitudes, habits, lifestyles, places, spaces, etc., as well as looking at how placing work in unusual (un-art-like) contexts, creating interventions and so on can play with and shift the boundaries of how art is perceived as 'art'.
A form of work in itself, and as such, selected documentation as well as the artwork that you create will be published on the website. Exhibition opportunities are encouraged but not mandatory.
APPLY: Please submit a short proposal via email outlining your interest in the project and how you feel your practice connects with it, along with 3 – 4 images of current work and a CV.
No key skills sought, just interesting proposals.

- James R Ford
James R Ford is a British artist whose practice is engaged with pastimes, pursuits and obsessions. Ford delves into the activities and influences of his childhood as a way of both embarking and staying put. Exploring notions of repetition, boredom and idiocy with a sense of humour and pathos. His body of work consists of projects and investigations based around observations, process and play: ranging from inventing a new home based sport, to covering a Ford Capri in over 4,000 toy cars, to spending countless hours scribbling loops.
