The preservation and celebration of Auckland's diversity, history and culture is important in building a vibrant and strong city. The Community Development, Arts and Culture (CDAC) department is one of the key customer interfaces of Auckland Council. CDAC works closely with local communities to foster community pride and belonging, celebrate diversity, and add heart and colour to local areas.

An outstanding opportunity has become available to make a difference in CDAC. This role will contribute to the overall strategic thinking for the department. The groups that this role will be responsible for providing high level advice are Arts and Culture, Events, Community Development and Safety and Community Facilities.

The Principal Advisor is responsible for ensuring the effective operation of the department. As the key advisor in the department, a vital part of this role is to provide high-level advice and strategic support to the Manager Community Development Arts and Culture. The successful candidate will scan both the organisation and environment for issues that may affect the department and ensure the department is ready to respond.

This key appointment will also support the development of a cohesive and supportive culture across the department, and play a key role in business and strategic planning, operational reviews and maintain strategic partnerships with key stakeholders on behalf of the department manager.

Working in this environment requires you to be politically astute, flexible, exercise sound judgment and demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, negotiation and critical evaluation skills.

To be considered, individuals will have strong communication skills coupled with excellent leadership, relationship management and influencing skills to in order to build and sustain effective working relationships, and be ready to muck in, boots and all!

The ideal individual for this role will have at least five years' experience at a senior level in an operational, policy or strategy environment, preferably within the community development or arts and culture sectors. A tertiary qualification in community development, arts, or related field is desirable.
