Job description: 

We are looking for volunteers with a background in Art History, Fine Art, Curatorial Studies, Design, Drama, Education, Events Management, Film, Journalism or Landscape Architecture, to assist behind the scenes and realization of the SCAPE 2010 Christchurch Biennial of Art in Public Space.

All Art Project Agents should be based in Christchurch and be able to share their local knowledge of the Christchurch environment.

Art Project Agents (APAs) will be involved in a range of activities including:

  • APA Admin - office administration
  • APA Artists assistants - substitute acting, and making a documentary with one of the artists and recording moments of SCAPE 2010, the organisation and production process of an artwork
  • APA Education - assisting in preparation of a childrens art workshop and bringing artworks alive by telling stories to school groups
  • APA Events - assisting with planning, delivering and documentation of events
  • APA Guides - visitor hosting and guiding community groups, surveying visitors
  • APA Writers - monitoring and recording media content and updating blog content

Running from 24 September to 7 November 2010 the SCAPE 2010 programme will include large-scale site-specific public artworks and interventions by New Zealand and international artists – geographically centered along a public art walkway within the inner city. The public programme will include a symposium during the opening weekend with keynote speakers, discussion panels and guided walks, with additional events leading up to and during SCAPE 2010.  A visitor information hub will be located in Cathedral Square providing information to visitors and a meeting place for groups.   

APAs will work directly with SCAPE 2010 team and artists, gaining an insight into large scale art events and contemporary art practice. Where possible, APAs will also be given an opportunity to select an artist project to assist with in accordance with their own artistic and academic interests. By closely assisiting with their chosen project APAs will gain a firsthand knowledge and experience of  artist’s work, production and presentation in SCAPE.

Tasks and workload will vary according to the selected artist project with the most concentrated working period from early to late September 2010.

APA positions are voluntary and APAs will not receive payment for their work.  However, a reference letter from the Director will be provided at the completion of SCAPE 2010 in recognition of involvement and commitment.
