Auckland City Council is seeking an experienced physical theatre maker (performer/director) to work with children and young people in Riverside. This project builds upon the current circus workshops offered to local primary school aged children at the Riverside Community Centre. You will be working with a project coordinator (skilled in producing/community work) and circus artists to give children and young people the opportunity to create a theatrical circus performance and the opportunity to experience performing on stage.

This project will start in mid October and run through to June 2010. The successful applicant will run workshops in physical theatre skills (not excluding dance if this is your skill set) in conjunction with the cirucs workshops. You will work with the ideas and input of children and young people to devise a 45 minute – 1 hour perfomance, and support performers where possible to learn about all aspects of the production.

 This is a community theatrical circus project open to local children and young people under age 25 with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Project Objectives

-        To work with the local children and young people on a circus physical theate performance project that increases a sense of community and personal pride, resilience and self effacacy.

-        To ensure that children and young people fully participate and contribute to the development of their performance

-        To work with community stakeholders and strengthen community partnerships in the area

-        To facilitate children and young people learning and practising circus skills and performance skills, and to stimulate peer-led teaching of skills in the community

Desirable Outcomes

-        A work in progress showing at the end of this year, and a full-length performance piece in 2010, relevant to and supported by the Riverside community.

This position is a part time contract of an average of 3 - 5 hours per week. Please advise in your cover letter if you are available to work after hours and/or during school holidays.
