Call for Submissions
Auckland Theatre Company’s Literary Unit is calling for submissions of full length plays for its
annual festival of new work.
Previous plays that have been part of The Next Stage include: ON THE UPSIDE DOWN OF THE
WORLD by Arthur Meek, WHERE WE ONCE BELONGED by Dave Armstrong from the novel by
Sia Figiel, GHOST TRAIN by Fiona Samuel, MY NAME IS GARY COOPER by Victor Rodger,
MIKE AND VIRGINIA by Kathryn Burnett and Nick Ward, HATCH by Geoff Chapple.
Three plays will be selected for a 6 day laboratory workshop process followed by a season of 3
public presentations.
Playwrights or play writing teams from throughout New Zealand will be considered but please
note that scripts should be well-developed i.e. at least at 2nd Draft.
Checklist for Submissions:
• Short synopsis and logline
• Biography of playwright
• Personal statement from the playwright
• Brief history of development, including workshops/readings, noting key cast and
director
• Notes from the playwright about what they would aim to get from a workshop
including an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the current draft
• A stamped addressed envelope if the script is to be returned.
• Evidence of rights if the work is an adaptation.
Playwrights submitting work in languages other than English should provide English translations
of the text and undertake to provide access to a translator should the play be selected for
workshopping.
Playwrights must be available 27 September – 9 October. A return airfare and accommodation
will be provided for out of town playwrights.
Work that has previously been rejected by ATC Literary Unit will not be considered. No
correspondence will be entered into.
