Male actors required for Mrozek's OUT AT SEA
Three men find themselves on a raft in the middle of the ocean. Having something to eat OUT AT SEA is not a question of what... but whom. Someone has to be sacrificed and the three are struggling to find a 'just' way to decide for the right person. They hold democratic elections including a pre-election campaign, argue about the hardest of the three lives and blackmail a postman. Finally, one of them is getting convinced that it would be honourable to give his life for the others. He more and more becomes excited about that idea when the other two find a remaining tin of baked beans...
Slawomir Mrozek OUT AT SEA is an absurd and macabre comedy on the edge of life. More than anything it is a comment about the idiosyncrasies of the society we live in and the individuals in it. It explores human nature in all it's comedy and pathos and shows how politics, class, Darwin's natural selection, and political correctness intrude upon even small societies in the most ridiculous situations. By exaggerating and following through these notions to the bitter end, Mrozek's work reveals the absurdity of mankind.
The absurdist world of the play demands to find the inner logic within it and the actors to believe and follow this world and the inherent constraining rules. I am seeking for a playful approach that focuses on the ensemble and leaves the actors space for spontaneity to react out of the moment and in relation to the others. Through taking characters and situation seriously and seeking an honest expression I want to enhance the comedy of the performance, but also gain more weight regarding it's relevance beyond the scene.
The three weeks rehearsal period from 20/06 - 11/07 will result in three 20-30 minute showings to an invited audience. The performance will be assessed as my directing actor's project, meaning that it is focused on acting as means of expression without elaborate support through design or technical elements.
Two roles are still open:
The thin castaway is one of the lead characters. He must be rather small in body size and have a talent for comic acting in a serious setting.
The postman is a tiny role. She/he is coming to the raft to deliver a letter but then gets blackmailed by the three hungry men.
