Some general information

The Metonymy project
Metonymy is an annual Auckland-wide ‘creative collaboration’ project that focuses on forging new creative connections across the disciplines of visual and literary arts.
Metonymy provides the platform for artists and creative practitioners to explore media and communication ideas outside their area of expertise and experience.
2010 is the third year that Metonymy has run. In both 2008 and 2009, we achieved 33 successful pairings that resulted in 60 art works, numerous performances, and five publications including an exhibition catalogue and four volumes of poetry.
The 2009 Metonymy project had an extremely successful exhibition at the Aotea Centre, as part of The EDGE public programme, resulting in high audience numbers, positive feedback from sponsors and participants, and numerous artwork sales.
But most importantly, the Metonymy project has resulted in many new creative partnerships leading to further exhibitions, performance events, published books and theatrical collaborations, that all make a contribution to defining our contemporary culture in New Zealand.

Here’s how the Metonymy project works
Selected artists and creative practitioners will be matched up with another artist from a different genre – visual, literary or other. There is an emphasis on equal creative pairings in which each artist will spark off one another, creating a fusion of creative thought and visual expression.
Over a period of 6 weeks the artists will work together to create a collaborative multi-disciplinary work. Exploration and innovation with new artistic disciplines and digital media is encouraged.
The collaboration works are then judged by a panel of prominent figures and acknowledged experts including: Christine O’Brien, Riemke Ensing, Dr Simon Ingram and John Daly-Peoples.
The selected works will be show-cased at Corbans Estate Arts Centre in September and October 2010. The exhibition will run for 6 weeks. Performance and workshop programmes are planned to run during this time, complementing this year’s Going West Books and Writers Festival.

Hope to see you all again this year

Metonymy is an annual event aimed at encouraging collaborations between artists and writers/poets. Each artist will be paired with a poet or writer, and over the period of one month you will work together to create a collaborative multi-disciplinary work, the best of which will feature in an exhibition as an official fringe event of the Auckland Reader's and Writer's festival. There will also be a live performance event, various networking opportunities and a publication.
