The newly created role of Conservator is responsible for ensuring that all conservation functions are delivered to a high standard.

As part of the wider museum collection team, your effective planning and management will be responsible for supporting current conservation projects undertaken by skilled volunteers and management of the museum’s collection storage areas.

Reporting to the Museum Collection Manager your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing a Museum Conservation plan
  • Managing and monitoring the quality and requirements of suitable storage environments
  • Assisting with technical work in preparing and installing artefacts for exhibitions
  • Examine and evaluate collection object for treatment
  • Develop, implement and monitor an Integrated Pest Management Plan
  • Participate in the acquisitions and de-accessioning and loans process for the Museum
  • Communicate effectively the role of conservation and ensuring museum wide understanding
  • Work with the Museum Collection Manager in the development and presentation of training workshops on conservation.
  • Research and Documentation

Skills and Experience desired:

  • A degree or other appropriate qualification in Museum Studies
  • Small objects conservation experience desirable
  • Understanding of appropriate conservation treatment of taonga
  • 5 years successful relevant work experience
  • Proven writing and research skills
  • People management experience and effective leadership skills
