Last Call: 20th Annual Wallace Art Awards
The Wallace Arts Trust is calling for entries to the 20th Wallace Art Awards 2011, amounting to over $165,000. The Awards are the longest surviving and largest annual art awards of their kind in New Zealand and are widely regarded as the most prestigious. They differ from other important New Zealand art prizes in that they aim to provide challenging opportunities and broadening experiences to the top four winners by way of residencies at top-level international institutions.
The Awards are given for contemporary New Zealand painting, sculpture, video, drawing and unique photography to encourage and develop the visual arts in New Zealand, and in particular to reward those producing outstanding work.
This year the entries will be judged by Philip Trusttum, Peter Gibson-Smith and Sara Hughes.
Winners and selected finalists will be chosen for the Finalists Travelling Exhibition, on show at the TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre in Auckland from 6 September to 16 October 2011, and The Dowse in Lower Hutt from 29 October to 4 December 2011.

- TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre
The TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre is Auckland’s exciting new cultural destination. Located in the historic Pah Homestead in Monte Cecilia Park, Hillsborough, the arts centre opened to the public in August 2010.
Pah Homestead was fully restored by the Auckland City Council together with the generous support of TSB Bank from 2009 to 2010 as the new home of the James Wallace Arts Trust and its collection.
The arts centre hosts a changing programme of free exhibitions curated from the James Wallace Arts Trust collection as well as regional touring exhibitions. The arts centre will also run ongoing community education programmes targeting Auckland schools and the wider public.
An artist in residency programme in association with Otago University is an important component of the arts centre. This partnership also provides for exhibitions curated from the extensive collections of the Hocken Library.
Many thanks to the Auckland Decorative and Fine Arts Society and its members who provide ongoing support to the centre through the provision of volunteer docents.
