Ethan Montgomery-Williams

I am a graduate at Unitec studying Art Direction/Department (Diploma in performance Technology) This course covers a broad overview of the Art department for the film and television industry. I have the basic skills and knowledge in this area and I am very keen to learn more and develop my skills further. I’m young, have a passion for making film,and I am a keen, fast learner.

 

Key skills: 

Art Direction                                 Have Art Directed on year 1 and 2 Studio exercises, year 2 Video Dance (Relative to a music video), and have Art directed Year 2 and 3 Short films. Also Co-Art directed a kids show pilot with Amy Bridson called “Dramarama”.

Set Design                                   Have designed studio sets using Google Sketch up to pitch my idea.

Model making                              Have made models of my set designs to pitch my idea

Painting techniques                      Techniques include- Marble, wood graining, concrete, rust and ageing. Have also used air paint guns, commercial airless sprayers, HVLPs and Hudson pressurised sprayers.

Theatre set construction               Built various sets for theatre and film at Unitec including a rustic Russian house, a mental asylum and a bar/pub scene.

Film studio set construction          Have worked on studio sets at unitec including an aged prison cell, student flat, morgue, run down apartment and a water damaged attic.

Set Dressing                                Dressed many sets including a Video store, Bedrooms, Kitchens, Bars and Apartments.

Props making                               Constructed many different props including a knife/dagger, bulsar wood cricket bat, wooden puppet, cyborg arm, and a corpse. Have experience using materials such as resin, fibreglass, silicon moulding, two pot plastics, expanding foam.

Adobe Photoshop                         Have used photoshop to create paper props such as bottle labels and name tags.

Welding                                       Have done work with mig and gas welders, and have also had experience with brazing and soldering. Built Mini Chopper from scratch see photos attatched.

Sign Writing                                 Made custom window stickers for my cars.

Moulding and casting                    Moulded and casted using materials such as, silicon, plaster,                 clay, resin and fibreglass, easi-cast 2 pot plastic and expanding                  foam.

Art Department Rigs                     Built a Pulley rig for Elevator doors, Blood rigs (also made the               blood) and have made Breakaway doors and walls.

Basic hand tools                          Comfortable using most Hand tools including Drills, Saws,                     Routers, Sanders, Nail guns, Grinders and Linishers.

Workshop Machinery                    Comfortable using a wood/metal Lathe, Drill press, Milling                      machine, Sheet steel bender, Band saw, compound mitre saw,                   bench grinder. Have also had a small amount of work on a                        bench saw.

Leatherwork                                 Participated in a week course with “Wildman” making                              a leather wallet a belt and a bunch of key rings, learning                basic leatherworking skills.

Food Props                                  Prepared a dinner for 8 for the season of a theatrical play.  Also             prepared food and drinks for film.

Fabric dying and                           Participated in a week course with Miranda Browne dying fabric

Costume breakdown                    and learning costume breakdown techniques.

-I was appointed  the 2007 Head Boy position at Otamatea High School

-Achieved NCEA Level 3 2007 at Otamatea High School

Work history: 

-Worked one day on a feature film called “Ice” at Studio West making set dressing icicles.

-Worked on the second television series “Legend of the Seeker” at Henderson Valley Studios, doing scenic painting (brush hand)

-Built sets and props on feature film called “Insatiable Moon” directed by Rosemary Riddell

-Co-Art Directed a pilot for a kids show called “Dramarama”. Built and dressed the sets, worked on set,instructed others to carry out work and sourced props.

-Worked at Jaques Four Square Supermarket since 2003. Jobs at the supermarket include cleaning, serving customers and working in the back store.
