Virginia Boyle

I am a professional performance designer who has worked both in theatre and contemporary performance as a technician, designer, director, writer and performer. I originally trained in fine arts before moving to performance design.

In my last professional position as the Contemporary Performance Designer and Visual Dramaturg for the School of English, Media and Performing Arts, University of NSW, I was responsible for the design and implementation of costume, mise-en-scène and publicity material, (in both print and media), for all School productions, presentations and events.

As designer for the School I worked with director and lecturer Clare Grant (Sydney Front) and guest directors Kate Gaul, Mark Gaal, Caitlin Newton Broad, Nikki Haywood, Regina Heilmann, Deborah Pollard, Martin del Armo, Terence Clark and Arnie Neeme.

Most recently (2007) I Designed the costumes for Never Been This Far Away From Home, a performance by Martin Del Amo commissioned by Performance Space for their inaugural season at Carriage Works, Sydney.

I have also worked extensively in Theatre as Education as a writer, director and designer with several NSW companies - Darned Sock Theatre, Willpower Promotions and Shakespeare Where You Like It. Performances were targeted to school students from early primary to high school.

Having recently moved to New Zealand I have furthered my design training by completing a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Victoria University.

I also designed previous dance works by Martin del Amo; Unsealed and Under Attach, both touring nationally (Australia), and internationally

 

  • Design for Dreaming of a Better Future, a forum into Indigenous employment in the entertainment industries and the Tudawalli Film Awards, both at the Studio, Sydney Opera House.

 

  • Artistic director for Darned Sock Theatre, A company specializing in ‘rough theatre’ Shakespeare.
