Gemma Chalmers

I have spent the past 2 years working for Damien Hirst at his studio in Gloucestershire.  This has led me to be involved in various different projects, in particular the spot painting series of work.  My job has involved learning many different artistic processes and skills as well as art handling.  Working to a schedule and deadlines leading up to shows and juggling various projects has been an extremely important element.

As well as working in the studio, I have spent time looking after some of the admin relating to the studio and artworks, such as costing the production of artworks, organising photography sessions, sourcing and ordering materials and also conversing via phone and email between studios, head office and with suppliers.  Using and updating information on the studio's network database of artworks was also essential.

I have also had the opportunity to install a ‘spot’ mural based on one of Damien’s early paintings, on gallery wall space at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, which was part of the Colour Chart, Reinventing Colour, 1950 to today exhibition in February 2008. 

In addition to being involved with studio work for Damien, I have also had involvement with various other projects including music video shoots.  This included set production, liasing with suppliers of props.  General hospitality during shoots, looking after clients, and friends of Damien and making sure they had everything they needed.

I have demonstrated and developed my versatility whilst working at Science and I have fully enjoyed the challenge of taking on whatever has been asked of me.
