Fraser Reeves
I am currently undertaking postgraduate study in Art History and Sociology (Honours level) at Victoria University, Wellington. My long-term career goal is to establish myself in the contemporary art industry, either in the field of curatorship or as a valuer and art consultant. I would also like to get involved with the promotion of contemporary art practice through festivals, exhibitions and general funding through relevant regional and national organisations. Additionally, I have an interest in arts policy particualrly with regards to public art and the furtherment of a contemporary dialogue between art and the community.
Generally speaking, I have a passion for the arts and have found great enjoyment studying in the said disciplines. Concurrently, I write and perform music as well as pursue an amateur interest in photography and art writing.
Active Communicator
- I relish opportunities to be involved with discussions and find what others have to say very interesting. I am always careful to be accommodating of other people’s thoughts and perceptions.
- Over time I have learnt to articualte and communicate ideas that were previously challenging to present in a desirable format.
- I pride myself on plain-speaking and clear and accessible language.
- I also have a limited knowledge of French, which I am intending to develop.
Time Management
- I have always used my time efficiently and have been sure to avoid falling behind on deadlines. This skill in particular has flourished during my time at university.
- I have an intuitive sense of time and know my limits, but also know when more can be done and how it can be executed.
Academic Achievement
- I have successfully attained the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3.
- I studied various subjects through out my secondary education, but particularly enjoyed Englsh, History and Art History in my final year.
- As of 2010, I have completed a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Art History and Sociology.
Focused and willing to learn
- I have always intended to pursue my passions for the arts and have done so consistently.
- I am willing to learn from my peers and colleagues and to engage where I am needed in order to gain the necessary experience that will ultimately benefit my career and provide future opportunities.
- I have some experience working in a gallery environment at the Adam Art Gallery on the Victoria University campus, so I am certain that this direction is the one for me.
Reliable
- I have an excellent attendance record.
- I always seek to reach a good standard of quality and comprehension no matter what the task is.

(casual private functions)
On a casual basis I worked various functions and private parties during week nights after school and occasionally on weekends.
January-September 2008
Qantas Lounges Wellington Airport (Compass Group)
I undertook this job during my first year of university. My duties included general catering and maintenace of the food and beverage service available in the Domestic and International lounges, often sole charge. I had the opportunity to mingle with the lounge guests and develop a rapport with the regular travlelers.
2008 General Election
I was an Issuing Officer during the 2008 election based in the Rongotai electorate. On the day of the election, I was involved with providing the ballot papers for voters to fill out and upon the conclusion of the day a small team including myself were responisible for counting the votes collected in our area. I underwent a brief training period for this position and developed important customer service skills.
October 2008 Ministry for the Environment
I spent a short fixed period working within the library, carrying out small duties including the organisation of literature and general maintenance.
Summer 2008-09 (November-March) Beach Culture (Wellington Airport)
I worked at Beach Culture (a retail outlet) as a retail sales assistant. Shifts were mainly sole charge and I worked a wide range of hours from 3am to 9pm. I gained valuable experience working in retail as I was expected to approach customers and offer my assistance frequently. As it was often a sole charge position, I developed useful skills such as multitasking and prioritising particualrly when it was busy. I learnt how to operate the point-of-sales (POS) system and often completed the banking at the end of the day.
Summer 2010-2011 (November-March) Real Aotearoa
I undertook this position as a retail assistant/art advisor. Real Aotearoa is an enterprise of New Zealand post (stamps and coins division) that specialises in the dealership of New Zealand art pieces (mainly glass, ceramics and jewellery), as well as stamps and coins. This was a good opportunity for me to develop practical skills in art dealership and interacting with customers on an intimate level in order to see that their desires and needs were met. Two of my superiors had both previously worked in the art industry for long periods and I was grateful to receive advice and encouragement from them.
Currently
At present, I am no longer employed due to a comitment to my full-time honours study. However, I am still actively seeking casual work that I can fit in and around my university schedule. Since early 2010, I have been an active volunteer at the Adam Art Gallery. This position has provided me with some great experiences. Mid-way through 2010 I had the pleasure of assuming a minor role in the organisation and research of an exhibition, also taking part in its promotion. I hope to continue with my involvement in various visual art projects and various other projects that cross my path.
