I have always divided my work as an actor between theatre, cinema and television. I have featured in numerous Italian television series, and have carried out lengthy research into physical theatre, in particular Commedia dell’Arte. I studied Commedia in Italy, most importantly with Antonio Fava (International School of Comic Actor and international Workshop in Commedia dell’Arte). In 2006, after six years of research, I produced, directed and interpreted “Una Maschera in Prestito”: <<...the show is a homage to Commedia dell’Arte, to the Italian comic tradition, and represents a form of anthropological study into this theatrical art>>, Antonio Fava acted as artistic supervisor for the show. After this experience, I worked on my teaching method, concentrating mainly on the use of the poetic body <<The actor is an artist and an artisan, the language of Commedia dell’Arte is physical, corporal - not literary, the role of comic actor’s is to make you laugh not only with words, but most importantly with his body, his gesture, his jest. My method encourages the depersonalisation of the actor and compels him to adopt the character-body mask of a living sculpture, a super-human marionette. Group work is fundamental and Commedia teaches us that there are no protagonists, only one great orchestra>>. This is an invitation to undertake a voyage from the 16th Century to the present, during which Commedia will become an efficient on-stage instrument for all our actors.

 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE:

<<Pierluigi Coppola, thanks to the emotions of his “super human marionettes,” triumphed at the Subasio Theatre in Spello with his first autonomous theatrical production; “Una Maschera in Prestito.” An ironic and romantic comedy which touches on many universal themes; love, war, jealousy, fame, wealth, greed, betrayals and reconciliations, told through eleven characters all played by only one actor. Pierluigi Coppola “danced” alone on the stage for over an hour and a half accompanied by the extraordinary music of Luca Giuliani and by the handmade leather masks of his master Antonio Fava; revealing moments of crystalline class and pure comedy with his eclectic characters, entertaining a prevailingly young audience. “Over all, this show was meant to be a validation of theatrical research – explains Pierluigi Coppola – such as that which I encountered in my master, Antonio Fava. This “ridiculous” comedy is the result of a particular dramaturgical technique studied at the International School of the Comic Actor, known as the “Gabrielliana,” which consists in enacting an entire comedy, complete with all of its characters, singlehandedly. Pierluigi Coppola’s dream is to be able to diffuse the use of Commedia.>>
