Takumi Motokawa - composer/percussionist/pianist
Takumi Motokawa is a New Zealand-based composer, percussionist and pianist who graduated from New Zealand School of Music. He performed a reworked version of “The Passenger” on the marimba with Iggy Pop in the Orcon Internet ad series in 2009. He had been one of the core members of Strike Percussion - a high energy drumming group made up of New Zealand's most outstanding percussionists, specialising in movement-based, choreographed percussion.
Takumi came to Aotearoa in 2000 and attended school in Invercargill and later the musically famed Burnside High School in Christchurch. He has been living in Wellington for the last four years with trips to Japan, Australia, China, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to perform. In 2007, he composed some pieces for Strike Percussion's new show “Elemental”, which was performed in New Zealand and Taiwan. A versatile and prolific performer and composer, Takumi is currently studying TV and film music making at Berklee online college. He has worked with various New Zealand musicians and ensembles including Kora, Warren Maxwell, Gareth Farr, Deborah Wai Kapohe, Miho Wada, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Vector Wellington Orchestra, Southern Sinfonia, NZ National Youth Orchestra.
In 2010, he has won the second prize at the Percussive arts society international composition competition for his new timpani composition “Orochi”.
