Conductor Giordano Bellincampi
Piano Jean-Efflam Bavouzet
Stravinsky Symphonies of Wind Instruments
Bartók Piano Concerto No.2
Brahms Symphony No.4
Brahms’ last symphony – with its autumnal nostalgia, its solemn beauty, its rough humour, its homage to the old music he loved so much – was in many ways the apotheosis of his career. It is a mighty work, and a performance with Giordano Bellincampi conducting the APO promises to be a very special occasion.
So too is an appearance by the wonderful French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, making a welcome return with Bartók’s hard-driving, boisterous concerto.
Stravinsky’s brief but heartfelt tribute to Debussy, whom he revered, started as a piano chorale. Considered one of the major 20th century works for wind ensembles, the music emerges in clearly defined segments, each showcasing a different set of winds.
