The country’s only exclusive New Zealand content theatre Festival is planning an exciting evolution of the event in Hamilton 2012.

The FUEL Board has announced tthe new appointment of a locally based Festival Director, Sarah Nathan (nee Bettle) to the event.

Sarah, a Waikato based event, marketing and theatrical programming practitioner also manages the successful Waikato Times Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival.

Sarah says that FUEL is an extremely important cultural event both locally and nationally.

“I’m passionate about FUEL Festival, both for the quality of work it brings to and generates in the city, and also for its unique positioning in featuring only New Zealand originated works.

“It is crucial to a city’s cultural health to host events like FUEL. I am absolutely certain that the event has a sustainable long-term position in the city’s event calendar. I’m more than just a little excited about the prospect of developing the 2012 programme and working on new opportunities to strengthen the Fuel brand”.

Sarah say’s that she and the Board will be looking at a range of initiatives for the future progression of the event, including the possibility of making it an annual theatre event.

“Over the last few years FUEL Theatre and FUEL Music have alternated year on year. Hamilton has such an amazing music scene that’s developed over recent time including a number of festival type events that a FUEL Music Festival no longer seems as relevant. However an annual theatre festival will help with FUEL’s brand recognition and audience development.

“And of course the best part is we don’t have to wait two years each time for it to come back around”, she says.

The FUEL Board has also added a strong contingent of new trustees to ensure best practice governance with a broad range of expert skills.

Trustee’s of FUEL Board 2011 include Sara Young (independent), Geoff Drew (Chartered Accountant), Geoff McDonald (Norris Ward McKinnon), Eamonn Walsh (Verdict Advertising) and Jeremy Bell (Academy of Performing Arts).

Cr Angela O’Leary, chair of the city’s Events Sponsorship Committee is delighted that FUEL will once again be back on Hamilton’s annual event calendar.

“I believe Hamilton has a growing performing arts audience who want events like FUEL in the city to attend. I am also pleased that a highly regarded local event organiser has been secured to reenergise this once very popular event.”

While timing of the next event is yet to be confirmed, indications are that the Trust is looking to the traditional June slot for 2012.
