Final Call for Artist Submissions

Enhanced by the magnificent coastal landscape on Waiheke Island, headland SCULPTURE ON THE GULF is considered one of NZ's most prestigious contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibitions.  The event is a biennial event and free to the public attracting over 33,000 visitors in 2011.

Since the inaugural exhibition in 2003 the event has attracted many New Zealand and internationally established and emerging sculptors.

We are currently seeking proposals for the 2013 exhibition and welcome proposals for all kinds of sculpture, but particularly those which consider the connections between the work and the landscape. 

We hope to be able to offer support by way of a grant and will confirm this at a later stage.  You are strongly encouraged to research and, if possible, visit the island walkway before submitting your application.

The selectors for 2013 are John Gow (Chair), co-founder of Sculpture on the Gulf and Connells Bay Sculpture Park, Sue Gardiner of the Chartwell Trust and Lara Strongman, an independent curator from Christchurch.  The judge for the awards is Rhana Davenport, Director of the Govett Brewster Gallery.   Nansi Thompson has just been appointed Artistic Director.

Being selected for headland SCULPTURE ON THE GULF provides not only an opportunity to exhibit alongside other leading New Zealand (and international) sculptors, but also to present your work to the public in a unique coastal location and enjoy the camaraderie and strong community support for which the event is well known in the arts community.

There are also significant prizes for the winners of various categories.

Proposals are to be received by Thursday 31 May 2012 and artists will be notified in July 2012.

Submitting artists are offered the opportunity to explore the context of the site with Nansi Thompson, Artistic Director.
