Based in West Auckland and entirely self-taught, Laurette works in acrylics, rendering contemporary female figures in a naïve style built in flat layers of bold colour and soft, deliberate mark-making. 
Her current body of work grows out of the rhythms of raising young children, the tension between presence and disappearance, noise and stillness, identity and care. Drawing from natural surroundings and everyday objects around her, she paints atmosphere rather than story, a moment caught, not a scene being explained. There's a nostalgia running through the work, a sense of place that doesn't need translating leaving room for the viewer to meet it on their own terms
