Kana was introduced to Mizuhiki, a traditional craft of Ishikawa Prefecture, where she was born and bred. She was drawn to the charm of expressing sentiment through simple knots and colours, a subtle way of expression of Japanese culture. Kana’s work goes beyond the previous image of Mizuhiki work and highlights the possibility of modern Mizuhiki expression.
Kana says, "Mizuhiki" is a craft that expresses the hearts of Japanese people. It is an art that has been conveying ones thoughts and feelings through the choice of colours and knots.
How to enjoy the exhibition
- 1) Enter from the bamboo Kekkai gate. Scan the QR code for more information.
- 2) Look at the black and white banners and the exhibition from the gate.
- 3) Find a particular plinth that draws you. Walk towards it. Look at the mizuhiki clovers. What colour are they?
- Are they three-leafed or four?
- 4) Gently touch the clovers and find the special one. Why is it special to you? Is it because it is rare?
- 5) Look at the one you picked. Now, look at the mass where it is from.
- 6) In your own time, please gently return it to the mass.
- 7) You can redecorate the mass as you like.
- 8) Take a picture of it from above.
- 9) What can you see now?
- 10) Walk through the exhibition, repeat the same if you like.
- 11) Walk out in your own time.
