Mō mātou | About us
Our small but mighty team is looking for a new member, who’s just as committed as we are to promoting and supporting the sounds and music of Aotearoa New Zealand! Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
The Music and Services Adviser | Kaitohu Puoro, Ratonga works 30 hours per week, as the friendly face and knowledgeable voice of SOUNZ HQ. This role’s time to shine is during the hours that SOUNZ is open to the public, Monday-Friday 10am-4pm, so working in-person is a key element of the role.
SOUNZ will be settling into our home in the vibrant new arts hub of Toi Aro at 3-6 Market Lane from mid-June, surrounded by the rest of the local arts community of Wellington, and it’s an exciting time to be joining our team.
This varied role helps with our mission of promoting and championing the sounds and music of Aotearoa. Regular tasks include:
- liaising with SOUNZ composers and cataloguing their works on the SOUNZ website
- communicating with composers and the wider community to answer their queries about NZ music via email and phone
- supplying customers with scores and parts: anyone from local community groups right through to New Zealand’s professional orchestras, international ensembles, and other shops/libraries around the world
- providing repertoire advice and answers to music-related questions
- managing the SOUNZ shop and sourcing/sending items to customers
- updating events listings
- preparing and publishing sheet music, and ensuring that publishing supplies are stocked and the SOUNZ shop is running smoothly.
In collaboration with the rest of the SOUNZ team, this role offers invaluable support to our broad, inclusive, Te Tiriti-based vision for New Zealand music. Knowledge of notated music, score reading, and a genuine interest in NZ composition and customer service is a must. A full job description can be found on the SOUNZ website.
About You:
- Your administrative skills are legendary, and you relate with ease to a wide range of stakeholders
- You can communicate effectively and professionally with our people - these will include SOUNZ customers, member composers, performers, teachers, and other arts organisations
- Digital tools are a go-to for your work, and you may have experience in editing websites (but no in-depth coding knowledge is required)
- You are accurate and process-driven - this role will at times involve feeding into content calendars and project timelines, filing documents in Google Drive, and collecting shop and catalogue-related data for funding applications and reports
- You know how to read complex musical scores, have an eye for detail, and have a good understanding of the NZ compositional landscape already
- You’re proud about upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and SOUNZ’s Mahere Reo Māori in your work
- You enjoy being a part of a collaborative and tight-knit team, and also have a high level of self-management and the ability to prioritise tasks
- You’re organised and love following a process to a goal/deadline, but you also come with flexibility and creative flair (for those inevitable moments when plans change!)
- You’re naturally curious and eager to learn more about new works by our creatives
- You’re dependable and bring a high level of accountability to your working life - our loyal customers rely on us for a unique service, and having pride in SOUNZ’s reputation is important to our team
- You’re excited to apply your energy to promoting the work of New Zealand composers, ideally with good insights into the industry already, and are interested in joining a non-profit service organisation that partners with many of Aotearoa’s other arts organisations
