About our organisation
South Taranaki Art Gallery and Exhibitions (STAGE) Incorporated - Lysaght Watt Gallery - was established in 2005. We are a community-driven gallery which provides space for art exhibitions, community projects, and education.
With exhibitions change frequently, we're proud to offer a space that showcases a diverse range of artwork to inspire participants and visitors alike. This includes artwork contributed by our own gallery members, local artists, invited artists, as well as national touring exhibitions.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated committee of passionate individuals volunteer their time to ensure the smooth operation of the gallery.
We are supported by from the South Taranaki District Council, donations, and commission from sales. The Lysaght Watt Trust is a generous supporter of the gallery and we appreciate them and all our past and present funders.
Programme Overview
The inaugural Lysaght Watt Trust Art Award took place in 2013 at the Lysaght Watt Gallery in Hawera, South Taranaki. Unfortunately, in 2020, due to the challenges posed by Covid-19, the Award could not be held.
So, after a hiatus, we are proud to announce the 2026 Lysaght Watt Trust Art Award is back, running from 27 September – 23 October 2026 at our new gallery in Te Ramanui o Ruaputahanga, 121 High Street, Hawera.
The main prize of $3000, generously sponsored by the Lysaght Watt Trust, continues to attract submissions from artists all across New Zealand. Each year, a distinguished figure in the New Zealand art community is invited to judge the entries, choosing winners in various prize categories (including 3D and 2D) and having the honour of selecting the overall winner.
The winners are announced and the exhibition is officially opened during a gala evening at the Gallery. The People's Choice Award is presented to the artwork that garners the most votes from the public by the end of the exhibition.
A fresh theme is chosen for every biennial Art Award event. Past themes have included "Daily Life," "Yin Yang," and "Rising." This year our theme is "Open" - it is your choice.

Entries open on 1 April and close on 30 June 2026 with entry fee being $40. This year's theme is again "Open" (i.e. no specific theme) and categories open for artwork to be judged are 2D & 3D.
