The Grace Butler Memorial Foundation was established in 2017 to preserve the legacy of plein air Canterbury artist Grace Butler (1886-1962). The Award, instituted by the Foundation and Butler's daughter, Grace Adams, is intended to support an artist or arts student with links to Waitaha Canterbury who has a concern for place and environment, natural and built.

The recipient will receive:
A grant of $25,000 spread over the three month term of the residency
Access to a studio at the Ara School of Art & Design in Ōtautahi Christchurch for the term of the residency
Access to the Ara School of Art & Design's resources, including printing resources and technician support
Administration support from the Grace Butler Memorial Foundation
