Te Tuhi is a leading platform for contemporary art in Aotearoa New Zealand, with a programme consciously and continually shaped towards rigorous, adventurous and socially engaged artistic experimentation. Te Tuhi’s primary focus is on commissioning both national and international artists to make new work by creating stimulating contexts for artists to respond to and work within.
Te Tuhi presents work in its galleries in Pakuranga and Parnell, around Auckland and Aotearoa, internationally and online. Te Tuhi offers artists and curators opportunities to develop their practice through studios, awards, residencies and internships both in Aotearoa and overseas. Integrated with its exhibitions, Te Tuhi provides public programmes for general audiences and for schools.
Te Tuhi has been embedded in its local community for 50 years, delivering arts and cultural experiences for schools, young people, community groups and people of all backgrounds and ages. Arts Out East is Te Tuhi’s community arts brokering programme for the Howick Local Board area in East Auckland. Te Tuhi also operates Te Taiwhanga Taiohi, East Auckland’s Youth Space in Botany Town Centre. Te Tuhi’s building in Pakuranga hosts a vast range of independent community groups.

The Iris Fisher Artist Studio Residency is designed for emerging artists who demonstrate potential to contribute significantly to contemporary art in Aotearoa and beyond. Artists are not required to produce a final work or exhibition during the residency; the focus is on developing their artistic practice.
The residency offers:
→ Shared space in the Papatūnga Artist Studio at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, to work for 12 weeks with access 7 days from 9am-5pm and out of hours access by arrangement
→ A total stipend of $15,000 (disbursed as $5,000/month for the 3 months the artist is in residence)
→ Mentorship and curatorial support from Te Tuhi’s team
→ Access to workshop and resources by arrangement
Applicants must:
→ Be New Zealand citizens or residents
→ Be emerging artists or collectives who have not yet had a significant solo show
→ Be able to spend at least 25 hours per week in the studio
→ Use the residency to advance their artistic practice
→ At the completion of the residency the recipient will be required to provide a report and feedback on their residency.
While accommodation is not provided, out-of-town artists are welcome to apply if they can arrange their own accommodation in Auckland for the residency period.
