Mō tēnei arawātea | About this opportunity
The UXBRIDGE Malcolm Smith Architecture Fellowship celebrates the legacy of Malcolm Smith, a community minded architect and driving force behind the establishment and development of UXBRIDGE Arts and Culture. The fellowship supports early-career architects, architectural students, or architectural researchers seeking to advance or accelerate their practice. Funds may be applied to project research, development costs, professional development, or travel.
Malcolm Smith (1930–2010) was an architect and town planner whose career and service left a lasting mark on his East Auckland community. After training in architecture, he worked in London in the late 1950s, contributing to the design of New Zealand House, before returning to Auckland to join Kingston, Reynolds, Tom & Allardice, where he worked until retiring in 1990. Smith was one of the creative forces behind UXBRIDGE, both creatively and politically, serving as committee member and chairperson. He was actively involved with Ō Wairoa Marae where his architectural skills and community vision championed unity. Smith was honoured as Howick Citizen of the Year in 1988.
