We deliver a very popular Arts Education for Schools programme, as well as a wider programme of art classes and workshops designed for tamariki (children), rangatahi (youth), and adults. Our Schools’ Education workshops encourage students to push boundaries while feeling safe in the knowledge that making mistakes can be discoveries; and that the learning journey is paramount, rather than producing a ‘perfect’ result. Our Arts Education for Schools programme is based on the New Zealand Curriculum and supports inquiry and achievement objectives for Years 0 to 13.
We are looking for a dynamic and talented Art Educator to join our Education Team. Under the guidance and leadership of our two Education Co-Leads you will deliver engaging workshops and classes to students. This role will teach and guide students through various artistic disciplines, ensuring they gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This role will also contribute to the creation and development of new workshops.
Key Responsibilities
• Work across all aspects of the Arts Education for Schools programme to deliver and present workshops individually or in conjunction with a co-facilitator, artist or tutor, to school students Years 0-13.
• Work with the Team to prepare the teaching space and materials required for the delivery of each workshop. Assist with set up and pack down of workshop being taught.
• Under the leadership of the Education Co-Leads contribute to the creation and development of new workshops.
• Create teaching and visual resources as required.
• Maintain a high level of order and tidiness in all workrooms, teaching spaces, and shared spaces.
• Keep art resources in storage areas and workrooms tidy and organised.
• Assist with the preparation and delivery of CEAC events and activities including Kids Art Festival, Open Arts Day, Summer School and other major activations.
• Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages students’ creative expression.
What you will bring
• A relevant qualification in education, art education, fine arts, or a related field is desirable.
• Previous experience in teaching, curriculum development, and/or arts education is desirable.
• Skills and experience as an energetic, motivated art educator able to address large groups in an effective manner.
• The ability to adapt teaching strategies and approaches based on the needs and learning styles of individual students is important for ensuring that all students can succeed.
• Displays an awareness and aptitude for approaching art teaching as a way to enable creative thinking, allowing students to make their own decisions and direct their own outcomes within the structure of an art workshop.
• Strong working knowledge of practical arts techniques and art materials
• Familiarity with and sensitivity towards diverse cultural needs and practices and participants of all ages and abilities
• Have a basic understanding and an openness to including Te Reo Māori and Tikanga where appropriate in the teaching and development of workshops.
• Ability to plan thoroughly, apply attention to detail, be well organised and manage workload and time.
• Work effectively as part of a team.
This contract role is for up to 24 hours per week – primarily over Wed, Thurs and Friday, with some flexibility to work other days as required.
