Showquest is New Zealand's largest performing arts programme and event for young people aged 5–18. School groups from across Aotearoa create short stage performances incorporating art, music, dance, drama, culture, and technology. These events take place in regional theatres nationwide over May and June each year.

We're looking for an experienced, energetic Stage Manager to join us for the full 2026 Showquest national tour. This is a fixed-term contract role running May–June 2026, touring to 10 regions across Aotearoa.
Our ideal applicant is energised by live events and theatre, able to keep a cool head under pressure, and is passionate about creating an exceptional experience for young performers.
Key Responsibilities
Manage stage set-up and pack-down, including banners, signage, stage markings, and mics (pack in day).
Welcoming school groups (10-100 students) to the stage and deliver Health & Safety briefings before their rehearsals
Stage manage and run Showquest rehearsals, TOI (wearable art) rehearsal, the live evening show, TOI showcase and awards ceremony
Liaise with the Event Team and Production Team to keep rehearsals on schedule
Work with school teams on prop storage and movement on and off stage
Liaise with Production Manager and Producer to call the live show
Liaise with live show MC(s) and support them with scripts, timings, and cues
Ensure MC scripts are updated each region, and script is loaded onto iPad
Manage side-of-stage set-up for lunchtime meetings, prizegiving, and live music/props
Work with any student stage managers and student leaders
Work with live music tech for any live music elements
Maintain a safe working environment at all times and manage any health and safety risks
Complete police vetting prior to tour and abide by all Showquest H&S and Working with Children policies
Provide ad hoc assistance to the event team as needed (set-up, pack-down, production office support)
What We’re Looking For
Experience in stage management or a relevant theatre/events background
Applicants with basic backline and live music knowledge very welcome
Comfortable being on the mic and presenting to large groups of young people in a warm and fun manner
Calm, organised, and solutions-focused under the pressure of live events
A genuine love of the performing arts and working with young people
Able to commit to the full national tour dates (May–June 2026)
Willingness to complete police vetting ahead of the tour
Contract Details
$9,000 for the full tour + 8% holiday pay
All travel, accommodation, and food covered for tour dates (travel to/from Auckland)
Additional pre-tour and between-show office work available at $30/hr (approx. 7 days, flexible scheduling, based at our Dominion Rd, Auckland office)

Events include a half day pack in day, and event days run approximately 9am–10pm. All travel, accommodation, and meals are covered by Showquest.
